The 2 Day Masterclass
Participants in this two-day masterclass will come away with an increased understanding of what makes songs work and how to avoid the pitfalls of ‘overthinking’ the song writing process. Through a combination of lectures, exercises and listening sessions, Darden will share ways to improve both new and existing songs, and practical writing tools to help cut through the static that can get in the way of writing more (and better) songs. Structured over two-days, participants will have time in the evening to write on their own, incorporating the lessons into their own work and hearing it in others.

This masterclass is designed for songwriters over 50 who are passionate about their craft. Whether you’re an established songwriter or refining your skills, this event offers something for every level of experience.
Darden Smith
Over the course of his remarkable three-and-a-half decade career, Texas based artist Darden Smith has released 17 studio albums, landed singles on both the country and pop charts (including the Top 10 hit “Loving Arms”), composed a symphony, scored works for dance-theatre, produced a documentary for BBC Radio, published a widely celebrated book on creativity, exhibited works of visual art, and co-founded the non-profit SongwritingWith:Soldiers program, which pairs veterans with musicians in order to tap into the transformational possibilities of collaborative songwriting.
The Daily News hailed Smith as “one of the most respected American musicians working today,” while the Austin Chronicle dubbed him a “master song craftsman,” and AllMusic called him “a singer-songwriter blessed with an uncommon degree of intelligence, depth, and compassion.” In 2023 Smith was named the inaugural Songwriter-in-Residence at the University of Texas at Austin.

- Non-Residential: This is a non-residential event, so participants will be responsible for their own accommodation and meals.
- Lunch: Lunch is not included, but a simple menu will be available on-site at The Camden Club for your convenience.

- Materials: Please bring your favorite notebook, pen, and any instruments you wish to use. If you have existing songs you’d like to workshop, feel free to bring them along.
